Dual Citizenship

Section 8(3) of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011 provides that every dual citizen shall disclose his/her other citizenship within three months of becoming a dual citizen.

Failure to disclose in the prescribed manner attracts a fine of up to KSh 5 million or imprisonment for up to 3 years, or both (Section 8(4)).

Requirements for Dual Declaration

  • Submit online application on www.fns.immigration.go.ke
  • eFNS pre-filled application Form 3, attested by a Commissioner of Oaths or Notarized with official stamps
  • Three (3) recent passport-size photos (no glasses, no headgear, hair away from face)
  • Copy of Kenyan Passport or ID
  • Proof of Kenyan citizenship (including regaining citizenship letter if applicable)
  • Copy of other country’s passport
  • Copy of certificate of naturalization/citizenship (translated & certified if not in English)
  • Supporting documents for name changes (Marriage Certificate, Deed Poll, Gazette Notice)
  • Copy of Birth Certificate

Incomplete applications will not be accepted.

Voluntary Renunciation of Citizenship

Voluntary Renunciation

Under Section 19(1) of the Kenya Citizenship and Immigration Act, 2011, a Kenyan citizen by birth who voluntarily renounces citizenship must have their declaration registered by the Cabinet Secretary.

Requirements for Renunciation

  • Submit online application via www.fns.immigration.go.ke
  • eFNS pre-filled application Form 6 attested or notarized
  • Two payment receipts and three (3) passport photos (no glasses, no headgear)
  • Original & copies of Kenyan passport and ID
  • Copy of other country’s passport
  • Proof of new citizenship (certificate or court decision, translated if not in English)
  • Copy of Birth Certificate

Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Registration fee is non-refundable.

Regaining Kenyan Citizenship

Regaining Citizenship

This applies to those who were citizens of Kenya by birth but ceased to be citizens because they acquired another nationality before 27th August 2010.

Requirements for Regaining Citizenship

  • Submit online application via www.fns.immigration.go.ke
  • eFNS pre-filled application Form 1 and two payment receipts
  • Three (3) passport photos (no glasses, no headgear)
  • Copy of previously held Kenyan passport and ID
  • Copy of Birth Certificate issued at birth
  • Copy of other country’s passport
  • Copy of certificate of naturalization/citizenship (translated if not in English)
  • Supporting documents for name changes (Marriage Certificate, Deed Poll, Gazette Notice)

Do not apply for a Kenyan ID or passport until you have regained your Kenyan citizenship.
